Wedded Men Woes.
Imagine being a successful banker and an IIT alumni, working in one of the fortune 500 companies. A life, most of us would envy. Wouldn’t you? But that’s not what this father would say, he just wants his son back.
Rakesh Pilania committed suicide on 5th October of 2015 after his wife of 10 months threatened to file a false case under Section 498A of the IPC, which constitutes cruelty against wife by husband and relatives i.e. anything from domestic voilence to dowry harassment.
Out of fear of being dragged through the justice system and having his family being threatened too. Rakesh found it easier to end his life, than let his family go this embarrassment.
This isn’t an isolated case, every year there are tens of thousands of such cases. Men being oppressed and harassed by their wives. If a woman is unhappy and is getting a divorce, she adds on a few cases over her divorce filing to get her more money after the divorce. Imagine the kind of mental and physical strain this puts a man through, Imagine being married to a person for a few years, and out of the blue, she puts a few cases on you and moves back with her family. If you have a child with this woman the anguish of not being able to see your child is even worse. Why is Indian Justice System so skewed against Indian men?
Coming back to the story of Rakesh Pilania, A day after the death of this young man, Rakesh’s wife filed a false case of dowry harassment (498A) against the husband and his family. As if, their son’s death isn’t enough trauma to the family. Also adding on the charge of unnatural sex to the mix probably to add a more dramatic flair to the court hearing and give more backing to the wife’s side.
But why is this the first time you are hearing about this? The more important question is why doesn’t the media have its fingers all over this story.
“Man commits suicide over allegations of false dowry charges”
Maybe it isn’t a story big enough to hit national news but how many men have to die before the law takes notice? And we start making amends to the law against such atrocities.
While I was doing my research for this post, I was going through the National Crimes Records Bureau to get an estimate of such crimes where men have been falsely targeted with the intent of extortion, harassment and harm. To my dismay, the NCRB has no statistics on such crimes. There isn’t even a law against false accusations.
Rakesh’s family only got justice under IPC – abbetment to suicide. Which has brought some solace to the family but doesn’t bring their son back.
The National Crime Records Bureau has statistics for crimes against Women, Children, SCs, STs & Senior Citizens (IPC+SLL) but where is the statistics for crimes against Men or is the Government of India implying Men of India have had no crimes perpetrated against them. Men don’t get raped, men don’t abused. Men aren’t victims of domestic violence. Men are only the culprit of such crimes never the victims.
The statistics showing crimes of rape, domestic violence and abuse has a coy ‘$’ against its title, which means such crimes are worked out using female population as it is the rate of gender specific crimes.
Crimes against men are ignored or even made fun of, there are too many voices for female rights. Voices for male support are discouraged from speaking out and squashed under societal pressure; Such voices are called anti-feminists. No, This is not an anti- feminist blog. This is a Pro – Meninist Blog.
